Using Robotics to Generate Critical Ocean Data

Ships can’t deploy sensors in rough seas, satellites focus on the ocean’s surface, and buoys are stationary. The result is that much of the ocean is largely unknown, despite its economic and scientific importance. Scoot Science will change this. Oceanographic data such as subsurface temperature, salinity, and fluorescence is critical to a wide range of marine-based industries and research. However, the oceans are expansive, dangerous, and constantly changing; as a result, monitoring and sampling the ocean is logistically difficult and financially expensive. Autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) can collect orders of magnitude more ocean data and at a fraction of the cost of traditional techniques, but this technology requires specialized technical and oceanographic knowledge as well as access to an established AUV fleet. In addition, autonomously collected marine data, used in conjunction with other multi-disciplinary data sources, has the potential to unlock the role of oceanic teleconnections throughout Earth systems. However, organization, storage, and analysis of this geospatial data requires a deep understanding of data science, big-data processing, and oceanographic analysis. Scoot Science provides customers with a solution to these barriers and is striving to make autonomously collected subsurface data available to all marine-science stakeholders.
