AI News: The Road to Superintelligence
In his blog "The AI Revolution: The Road to Superintelligence," Tim Urban explores the possibility of superintelligent AI, which he defines as "an intellect that is much smarter than the best human brains in practically every field, including scientific creativity, general wisdom, and social skills." Urban argues that we are currently in the early stages of the AI revolution, which will eventually lead to the creation of superintelligent AI. He suggests that there are three major stages of AI development: narrow AI, artificial general intelligence (AGI), and superintelligence.
Narrow AI is already in use today, and refers to AI systems that are designed for specific tasks, such as facial recognition or language translation. AGI, on the other hand, is a hypothetical form of AI that would be capable of performing any intellectual task that a human can do. Urban suggests that once we achieve AGI, we will have entered the "danger zone" of the AI revolution, because AGI will be capable of self-improvement and could quickly lead to the creation of superintelligent AI.
Urban also explores the potential consequences of superintelligent AI, which he argues could be catastrophic if we do not approach its development and implementation with caution. He suggests that superintelligent AI could pose an existential threat to humanity, as it could outcompete us for resources, manipulate us for its own goals, or even decide that we are a threat and attempt to eliminate us. Overall, Urban argues that we must be proactive in managing the development of AI and ensuring that it is aligned with human values, in order to prevent potentially disastrous outcomes.
Urban postulates that the world in 2030 could be as different from today as today is from 1750, and the next significant development in technology could occur in just a couple of decades. The world in 2050 could be unrecognizable compared to today's world due to the rapid pace of technological advancement.
