To enhance undergraduate research opportunities within the Baskin School of Engineering at UC Santa Cruz, Assistant Professor of Computational Media David Lee has been appointed as the school’s inaugural Director of Research Pathways. This new role will focus on expanding access to research experiences for undergraduates, allowing them to gain valuable skills and contribute to impactful solutions for societal challenges.
Undergraduate research experiences provide students with opportunities to delve into complex problems, develop critical thinking skills, and explore potential career paths. Baskin Engineering faculty and researchers are actively engaged in addressing a wide range of societal issues, including climate change, human health, and modern computing. By participating in research projects, undergraduates can contribute to these efforts and make a tangible impact.
In his role as Director of Research Pathways, Lee will collaborate with faculty, staff, and students to create more inclusive and accessible research opportunities. This includes expanding the number of research projects available to undergraduates, integrating research into the undergraduate curriculum, and providing mentorship and support to students throughout their research experiences. Lee’s previous work as Principal Investigator of the Tech4Good lab demonstrates his commitment to involving undergraduates in research and fostering a collaborative learning environment.
