Joby Aviation, Inc. (NYSE: JOBY) a Santa Cruz based company developing electric air taxis, has applied for its aircraft to be certified in Australia. This application to Australia’s Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) aims to validate Joby’s FAA type certification, paving the way for quiet, emissions-free air taxis in Australia.

“We’re incredibly excited about the potential for air taxis to offer new and more sustainable ways to travel around Australia’s global cities,” said JoeBen Bevirt, Founder and CEO of Joby.

Joby’s air taxi can carry a pilot and four passengers at speeds up to 200 mph with less noise than helicopters and zero emissions. The company has completed over 33,000 miles of all-electric flight. In November 2023, Joby became the first electric air taxi to fly in a major U.S. city, showcasing its aircraft in New York.

Type certification involves rigorous testing to ensure safety and readiness for commercial use. Joby was the first electric air taxi developer to have its FAA certification basis published and has progressed through several stages of the FAA process. In addition, Joby has also applied for certification validation in Japan and the UK. In June 2024, Joby received FAA approval for its in-house software, ‘ElevateOS’, designed for high-tempo, on-demand air taxi operations.

Joby, listed on the New York Stock Exchange, has raised over $2 billion from investors including Toyota, Delta Air Lines, SK Telecom, Uber, and Baillie Gifford.
