Santa Cruz Welcomes The Neighbor’s Pub

Santa Cruz has a rich history of LGBTQ+ activism, a legacy marked by hardship, bravery, and resilience. The beginning of LGBTQ+ history in our community cannot be confined to a single defining moment, but it gained significant momentum in 1975 with the organization of the city’s first annual Gay Pride Festival. In 1989, this same community founded an LGBTQ+ resource center called The Santa Cruz Lesbian and Gay Community Center, now known as The Diversity Center.

Since then, this community has made leaps and bounds in securing rights for the gay, queer, and trans community. Recently, a new fixture of the Santa Cruz LGBTQ+ scene has taken up residence on Pacific Avenue. Called The Neighbor’s Pub, this space welcomes people of all sexual orientations, gender identities, and cultures to enjoy queer expression and strengthen social bonds.

“The Neighbor’s is more than a queer bar,” the team expresses on their website, illustrating their commitment to public service, social justice, and philanthropy. They will provide more than just a space for mingling, dining, and celebration—they aim to create a vibrant hub of inclusivity and diverse entertainment opportunities. So far, the young business hopes to “create community through events of many types — from classes, drag competitions, to live entertainment.” In addition, they are committed to giving back, pledging a portion of their profits to conservation efforts and supporting local LGBTQ+ and BIPOC communities. Through donations and fundraisers, The Neighbor’s seeks to strengthen bonds, celebrate diversity, and leave a meaningful, lasting impact on the causes closest to their mission.

The Neighbor’s Pub held its ribbon-cutting ceremony on December 5th, followed by a soft opening to the public. They will be open from 4-11 PM on Thursdays and Fridays and 12-11 PM on Saturdays and Sundays. Stop by during their hours, participate in their events, and experience firsthand what makes The Neighbor’s more than just a pub—it’s where everyone is welcome and diversity is celebrated.

In the wake of a heinous act of vandalism, it is more important than ever to recognize the importance of protecting safe spaces and fostering environments where all individuals feel valued, respected, and secure. As a community, we should feel inclined to take up the mantle of social activism, no matter how small our actions may be, to contribute to a culture of inclusion, resilience, and unwavering support for those who need it most.

Together, we can ensure that spaces like this continue to flourish in Santa Cruz. Come out, show your support, and be a part of a lengthy history of activism and equity in Santa Cruz County!
