WeatherFlow-Tempest Launches Second StartEngine Campaign
WeatherFlow-Tempest, Inc. launched its second Start Engine campaign on Wednesday, January 4th, 2023. The Scotts Valley-based company is disrupting the private sector weather industry by providing AI and machine learning-backed hardware and software technology to help mitigate and control the impact and cost of weather on businesses and daily life.
WeatherFlow-Tempest, Inc. was created in 2019 by CEO Buck Lyons, and co-founders David Saint John and Phillip Atkinson. Together they recognized the gap in consumer access to advanced weather technology and saw an opportunity to combine their skills to develop a product different from anything on the market.
Unlike existing weather apps and hardware weather technology which pull and provide weather information for a broad and non-specific location, WeatherFlow’s Tempest app “feeds real-time observed weather data from your backyard into a machine learning system to dramatically improve forecast accuracy.”
WeatherFlow-Tempest, Inc. CEO, Buck Lyons remarked, “We help the world understand and control the enormous impact of weather. We do that using proprietary data science and in-house weather modeling to create the most accurate weather data available. We then deliver that data via useful tools, including a robust API. The applications are wide-ranging and nearly limitless in potential, ranging from mitigating wildfire risk to matching energy use with demand to simply better planning your day."
With the majority of us in California currently experiencing unparalleled weather, damaging storms, bomb cyclones, and flooding, it is clear, now more than ever, why and how the accuracy and precision of weather technology are important. According to the company, 4.7 million unique users utilize WeatherFlow-Tempest Inc.’s consumer weather services and as well as major organizations such as Disney, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, National Weather Service, U.S. Coast Guard, and the U.S. Navy.
The company launched its first Start Engine campaign back in September of 2021 with the goal of $1.5m. This target was quickly met in just four weeks and thereby extended to $2.5m. For the company’s second campaign, it hopes to hit the $2.5m goal and use the funds to support further growth and development of the company. As of January 19, the company has raised a little over $766k.
WeatherFlow-Tempest CEO Buck Lyons commented, "This is our second fundraising campaign with StartEngine, and it’s a nice fit with our view on capital partners. We saw advantages in self-funding when we started in 2019. As a next step, we issued convertible notes to individual investors, several of whom run VC and private equity funds. Raising capital via the StartEngine platform now allows us to think of customers, investors, and others who support our mission as one. If and when we need growth equity of $10m or more, we will likely seek institutional investment."
When asked if the company will be hiring in the near future, Michele Redmon, WeatherFlow-Tempest’s B2C Marketing Director commented on behalf of the organization that, “While hiring has slowed over the six months, we always seek talented people to join our team. We welcome developers, marketing specialists, and forecasters to send resumes to jobs@weatherflow.com.”
