NSF SBIR/STTR — Up to $1.55M for deep-tech startups
NSF's relaunched Small Business Innovation Research and Small Business Technology Transfer programs provide non-dilutive R&D funding for startups turning scientific discoveries into commercial products. NSF takes no equity and you keep full ownership of your IP. Phase I awards fund proof-of-concept; Phase II funds continued development. The program funds across nearly all technology areas — hardware, biotech, climate, AI, advanced manufacturing, and more.
Who it's for: US-based startups developing high-risk, high-impact deep technology with strong commercial potential. Must be at least 50% owned by US citizens or permanent residents. Start with a short Project Pitch — if invited, submit a full proposal.

California's Office of the Small Business Advocate awarded $2M+ to 37 startups across 17 counties in early 2026. Grants support innovation in health tech, clean energy, AI, and advanced manufacturing. More than 70% of recipients are pre-revenue companies. Applications flow through California's 13 regional Accelerate CA Hubs — founders connect with their nearest hub to begin the intake process and get positioned for the next round.
