NEST Flight 2021 Day One with Reed Hastings

During day one of NEST Flight 2021, we got a warm welcome from Amber Gonzales-Vargas from the Latino Community Foundation and Jacob Martinez the founder of Digital NEST. We were joined by the inspirational Reed Hastings Co-Founder & Co-CEO of Netflix for his keynote session and Q&A.

Here are a few points / takeaways Hastings mentioned for people entering the tech workforce:

  • Companies look for rapid learners.

  • Job security in its traditional definition does not exist anymore. Job experience is all about the skill set you develop and the people you meet.

  • Have the confidence and the self awareness to be one of the truth tellers in a constructive way so the organization is a little better.

  • The joys of the last 23 years at Netflix is only possible because of Hastings going though the difficult times with his past failed startups and the extreme challenges of his previous own startup.

During the Q&A Hastings was asked where will Netflix be in 10 years?

He answered that he of course would like it if Netflix was the top streaming company but admitted that new streaming services like Disney+ and HBO Max will be big competition. He also mentioned that it will be interesting to see where other tech crossovers like Apple+ and Amazon will end up with their own streaming services.

Hastings also gives an interesting view on “work / life balance” at the 42:18 mark where he defines work life integration.

Thank you to Jacob Martinez and the whole Digital NEST team for the time and effort putting on this inspiring event.
