Santa Cruz Innovation Powers Amazon’s New AI Delivery System

Amazon is set to roll out its Vision-Assisted Package Retrieval (VAPR) technology in 1,000 electric delivery vans by 2025, significantly improving delivery efficiency. This AI-powered system marks packages with visual cues—a green circle for those designated for the current stop and a red X for others—allowing drivers to locate the right packages quickly without scanning labels or using mobile devices.

Developed partially in Santa Cruz, California, the VAPR software leverages machine learning and computer vision, integrating AWS tools like SageMaker and IoT Greengrass. By optimizing the delivery workflow, VAPR saves drivers up to 30 minutes per route and reduces physical and mental effort by 67% based on pilot tests in areas such as North Boston.

The technology aligns with Amazon’s sustainability initiatives, as the electric vans it powers are part of the company’s Climate Pledge to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. These Rivian vans will streamline delivery operations and ensure a greener, more efficient future in logistics.
