How 100+ Women Who Care Turn $100 into $10,000 for the Community
In a world often clamoring for complex solutions, sometimes the most impactful change comes from a remarkably simple idea. That's the story of 100 Women Who Care , a grassroots movement that began with a powerful vision in Jackson, Michigan, and has blossomed into a force for good, now with a chapter that’s thriving right here in Santa Cruz.
It all started in November 2006, when Karen Dunigan gathered 100 women with a straightforward proposition: commit to one hour, four times a year, and donate $100 directly to a local charity. The result? A staggering $10,000 raised in a single meeting, providing 300 much-needed baby cribs for a local organization. This initial act of collective generosity ignited a spark, and the concept quickly spread. Today, hundreds of chapters across North America, now inclusive of all genders, stand as a testament to the power of unified giving, collectively channeling over a million dollars to vital community initiatives.
The essence of this movement is beautifully captured in their motto: Collective action ~ Empowering community. It's a principle that resonates deeply in Santa Cruz, where the local chapter of 100+ Women Who Care is making a tangible difference. Forget endless fundraising galas and time-consuming volunteer commitments. This is philanthropy streamlined, impactful, and accessible to everyone.
Here's how it works: Members gather four times a year – in March, June, September, and December – with the simple intention of contributing $100 to a local 501(c)(3) nonprofit. The upcoming meetings for 2025 are scheduled for June 11th, September 10th, and December 10th, all taking place at the Museum of Art and History (MAH)'s inviting Garden Room, located at 705 Front Street. Attendees are encouraged to arrive at 5:30 PM to enjoy the vibrant atmosphere of Abbott Square with a bite to eat and a beverage before the one-hour meeting commences at 6:30 PM.
Imagine the impact: when 100 individuals come together, that single $100 donation transforms into a powerful $10,000 injection of support for a local cause. The Santa Cruz chapter has already channeled over $306,000 into the community, providing crucial resources for those who need it most.
The process is democratic and community-driven. Members nominate local nonprofits, ensuring that the funds directly benefit Santa Cruz County residents. At each meeting, three randomly selected organizations have five minutes to passionately present their mission and explain how the potential $10,000 would be utilized. Following these concise presentations, members cast their votes, and the winning organization receives the collective donations. Whether by check or online, every contribution amplifies the impact.
