AI & Society - Issues and Opportunities.

Community Television of Santa Cruz County and the Santa Cruz Public Libraries present a discussion series titled "AI & Society - Issues and Opportunities."

Moderated by Becca King Reed, Executive Director of CTV, this is a series of 1 hour presentations and discussions about AI and how it will impact society. There will be experts in the subject area, each discussing the potential impacts for about 10 to 15 minutes. The remaining time is for audience participation and questions. The series will be video streamed and recorded for playback on CTV. The first panel is September 12 at 6:30 PM at the Capitola Branch Library. The subject is "AI & Education". 

  • Sept. 12 - AI & Education: We will have a technology expert and an expert teacher from the County Office of Education. Topics include:

  • How can AI be effectively integrated into the curriculum to enhance learning outcomes for students?

  • What are the potential ethical implications of using AI in educational settings?

  • How can AI support personalized learning and adapt to individual student needs?

  • What impact will AI have on the role of teachers and the overall education system?

  • Oct 10 - AI & Democracy: We will have a local politician and possibly sociology / psychology expert. There will be a demonstration of how easy it is to create "Deep Fakes". Topics include:

    • Manipulation of public opinion: AI-powered algorithms can be used to manipulate social media platforms, spreading misinformation, and influencing public opinion. 

    • Concentration of power: The use of AI in governance can reinforce existing power structures.

    • AI and Elections: Concerns for AI and elections include: Manipulation and tampering, etc.

  • Nov 14 - AI & Creativity: There are numerous local artists that can comment on this. We will also have demonstrations of how easy it is to create artistic content of many types. Topics include:

  • Intellectual Property: The use of AI in creating art blurs the line between originality and derivative work.

  • Loss of Human Creativity: There is a concern that reliance on AI-generated art could diminish the role of human creativity

  • Automation and Job Displacement: As AI technology advances, there are concerns about the impact on employment.
