The Baskin School of Engineering and Tech4Good Lab at UC Santa Cruz have developed the beginnings of a new program, Creative EDG2 (Creative Engineering Design for Global Good), to strengthen community engagement through collaborative projects. The purpose of the program is to integrate undergraduate education and involvement within the community, in order to incorporate broader roles and opportunities for engineering students. The vision is to provide real-world experiential learning for undergraduates and support local stakeholders. The goal of these experiences outside of the classroom is to cultivate an entrepreneurial mindset among students to deliver social, moral, environmental, and technological outcomes of value towards global good. By developing community-minded technologists, as well as connecting courses and initiatives across the Baskin School of Engineering, the program aims to work with businesses, non-profits, and governments projects.

David Lee, a leading professor on the capstone projects, has recently presented at TEDxSanta Cruz on Redesigning Our Economy to Maximize People’s Fullest Contribution. The theme of the talk centered around “the Art of Hope,” which is considered as the driving force that can bear fruitful innovations and social justice.
