Using Buckets and Beads to Strategically Prioritize Business Needs at CEO Works

The monthly CEO Works was held on Thursday February 23, 2023 and tackled the common challenge of helping to answer what needs to be done first when so much seems important at once. LeBaron Meyers/Convey With Conviction and Ty Hammond/One Mountain Leadership led another interactive session with the focus on how to strategically prioritize your list of business needs in the most productive way.

The exercise began with participants doing an Honest Inventory of how they spend their work week by breaking it down into the various major Buckets/categories. Next, they assessed how much of their time was actually spent on each Bucket versus how much time they should ideally spend on each Bucket.

From there, they identified the following:

  • the bucket(s) they personally enjoy doing most

  • the bucket(s) they personally enjoy doing least

  • the bucket(s) they think would be the easiest to delegate/outsource

  • the bucket(s) they think would be the most difficult to delegate/outsource

The final step was to look at the initial Buckets and walk through an exercise called "Pulling the Beads". The goal was to recognize the greatest leverage point should one Bucket be given more priority over the others. Through this activity, participants were able to assess the domino effect of what would happen to all of their Buckets according to which Bucket they focused on first. Then the participants broke into small groups to share reflections, insights and challenges.

By the end of the session, each participant was able to identify and share their key leverage point and practical next step. Several CEOs expressed that the activities and small group sessions provided them with clarity on what to work on in the next quarter and year that they likely would not have had otherwise.

Future CEO Works gatherings will address other topics through guest speakers, group discussion and mutual support to drive progress in our businesses and community. Thanks to all who participated and to Greg Wimp of Togo's Scotts Valley for providing another delicious lunch.
