Clean Oceans at Blue Innovation Day 2024

Clean Oceans International (COI) is a 501c3 nonprofit dedicated to reducing ocean plastic pollution through research, innovation, and direct action.

Our Programs

Events such as Blue Innovation are vital to Santa Cruz and the global community, as they foster entrepreneurship, hopefulness, and connection between a variety of companies and organizations, in the spirit of protecting the coasts and oceans of the world.

  • Adopt-a-Beach & EPAP: Our new COI Beach Adoption Program integrates the Environmental Plastic Assessment Program (EPAP), a proven method for tracking plastic debris dispersion and composition on shorelines. Since 2012, EPAP has mobilized citizen scientists worldwide, combining cleanup efforts with quantitative plastic monitoring in locations such as Monterey Bay, Lake Tahoe, and international sites like Brazil and Micronesia. EPAP data informs local policies, corporate responsibility, and waste management improvements, driving impactful community and global change.

  • Plastic Waste Conversion (PWC):. COI is pioneering small-scale, customizable PWC systems that convert plastic waste into usable fuels like diesel, gasoline, and paraffin wax. These machines are set to be deployed in remote island communities and urban areas in California, offering practical solutions to local plastic waste challenges.

  • Community Engagement & Education: COI leads beach cleanups and participates in global environmental events including the U.S., Brazil, the British Virgin Islands, and beyond.
