Purcell Q1 Update
Purcell, an innovative retail merchandising equipment company based in Santa Cruz, California, and a Santa Cruz Work’s Accelerator program member, recently released an overview of its Q1.
Purcell Q1 Overview
We started the year with an implementation with Seventh Generation in Vermont. Following the Seventh Generation implementation, we exhibited at Expo West, one of the largest retail trade shows in the US. After Expo West, Russ and I flew to Europe to meet with strategic and key retail and brand partners.
Seventh Generation Implementation
In late December we shipped an S1 Dispenser to Healthy Living, a grocery chain based in Vermont. This implementation is in collaboration with Seventh Generation, a Unilever company. This is a big opportunity for Purcell as Unilever is one of the world’s largest consumer packaged goods (CPG) companies with over $50B in revenue. The pilot was successful and we continue to work with them. We are currently collaborating with Seventh Generation for more implementations in 2023!
As you may remember we finished last year with a successful implementation with Nestle, the world's largest food company. These relationships with two of the world's largest CPGs have given us global attention from retailers, especially from Europe.
I have always viewed Europe as a large opportunity for Purcell. However, domestic manufacturing and growth has proved challenging enough. International manufacturing and growth felt untenable for the next few years, until now.
Strategic Partnership
In March, Purcell signed an MOU entering into a strategic partnership with Bizerba. Bizerba is a German manufacturer of scales, packaging equipment and more. They are the world's leading manufacturer of retail scales which are similar products to our S1 Dispenser from a hardware standpoint.
In March Russ and I flew to Bizerba’s headquarters in Germany to meet with their owner/CEO and senior leadership. While we were there we met with the department heads to understand different aspects of the company including hardware manufacturing, software integration, legal and business development/sales.
We also took the opportunity to meet with and strengthen our relationships with our contacts at European retailers and brands.
International Development
Russ and I traveled to Switzerland to meet with the world's largest food company with over $93 billion in revenue. We set a road map to integrating our product into their ecosystem- no small task…
We had the opportunity to work with the 8th largest retailer in the world, meeting at their headquarters in Paris. This is an especially exciting opportunity as France has passed a law requiring retailers to sell at least 20% of their products in bulk by 2030. Bulk and package-free is an especially explosive category as consumer demand and government regulations are accelerating the need for our S1 Dispenser.
I traveled from Paris to Amsterdam to meet with a major brand under the Ahold Delhaize group. Like much of Europe, they are seeing overwhelming demand from shoppers for less plastic packaging. From Amsterdam, I traveled to England to meet with another global retailer with over 10K stores. I was able to meet with the director of packaging and innovation who works directly for the CEO. They are impatiently waiting for the S1 Dispenser to be delivered later this year.
Our final meeting was with another potential strategic partner in Ireland. This partnership is not at the stage to be publicly discussed but there may be a lot of support for the peripherals of the S1 Dispenser including packaging and product freshness, cartridge sealing, and more.
We have also significantly strengthened our IP base. In January we were issued a new patent as well as multiple new claims on our existing patent. From a strategic standpoint, we are offensively positioned as the market leader for packaging-at-purchase solutions and defensively ready to defend what we are building through our IP base.
I look forward to sharing more good news with you next quarter,
David, Russell, and the Purcell team.
