Titans of Tech 2022 Community Collaboration

The annual Santa Cruz Works Titans of Tech event has found local talent to create the awards. Past years have included Ventana Surfboards and Annieglass. For 2022, we asked Ted Holladay of Studio Holladay to work on the design, and Jordan Layman of Idea Fab Labs to build a memorable award. And they delivered!

Design It

Ted designed the original Santa Cruz Works logo over 8 years ago. He collaborated with Jordan on materials and fabrication, then iterated his design into an award.

“It’s always fun to work with the team at SCW and help with projects like this one. After creating the SCW brand, I knew the visual style would have legs, so it was easy to imagine the award design based on the logomark. It’s become a recognizable mark in Santa Cruz, so it made sense to have the awards directly represent the brand." Ted Holladay

Build It

Jordan has been helping businesses for 15 years with everything from masks during the early days of the pandemic, to 3D printing, laser cutting, wood carving, and much more. Idea Fab Labs provides DIY (“Do it Yourself”) memberships where all tools are available for you to explore and create, as well as contract work. He was our immediate choice for this job.

“The trophies are made almost entirely with our CO2 laser cutters. We built the bases out of birch wood and the illuminated portion is engraved acrylic. We embed LED Neopixels and a lighting controller inside the wood base and the lights can be changed with a nifty little remote!” Jordan Layman

We think they are pretty awesome. What do you think?
