UC Santa Cruz Launches Center for the Advancement of STEM Leadership
UC Santa Cruz Campus Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor, Lori Kletzer, announced the establishment of the Center for the Advancement of STEM Leadership. Enrico Ramirez-Ruiz, professor of astronomy and astrophysics at UCSC, has been selected to be the center’s faculty director.
The center will be dedicated to establishing workplaces and learning environments that reflect our equity-forward values and allow the full human diversity of our nation and the world to meaningfully contribute to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields.
The center will work on a variety of efforts including:
Developing leadership pipelines through building programs that promote and support the recruiting, hiring, and development of diverse scientists capable of supporting underrepresented students and trainees
Create healthy workplaces and learning spaces by demonstrating knowledge of evidence-based mentoring practices and providing effective resources for mentees as well as reporting and assessment of mentoring built into funding proposals
Ensure that the career development of mentees is a focus of funded programs
Build mentor networks and provide support and professional development opportunities for trainees, mentors, and mentees
Collect survey and demographic data and outcomes to assess programs
