UCSC Lifetime Achievement in Innovation 2023: David Haussler

David Haussler, distinguished professor of biomolecular engineering in the Baskin School of Engineering and scientific director of the UC Santa Cruz Genomics Institute, received the 2023 Lifetime Achievement Award, part of the UC Santa Cruz Chancellor’s Innovation Impact Awards Program.

Haussler’s work lies at the interface of mathematics, computer science, and molecular biology. For more than two decades, he and his team have been at the forefront of genomic discovery - assembling the human genome for the first time, creating a genome browser, both available to the public, and now leading the pangenome initiative. Besides these breakthroughs, he is best known for his emphasis on interdisciplinary partnerships and the people he has trained and mentored.
