Borde: Revolutionizing Sorting and Inspection with AI

My initial inquiry to Saumitra, known to many as “Sam” Buragohain, the founder and CEO of Borde, was a straightforward one: “How exactly do you pronounce the name of your company?” In English, the Spanish word "borde" translates to "edge" or "border," and it’s pronounced "bor-day".

In 2019, Sam founded Borde with a singular vision: to enhance the precision and efficiency of sorting and inspecting materials across diverse industries such as food, pharmaceuticals, minerals, and recycling. Through the application of AI technology, Borde is setting a new standard for effectiveness in processing.

Consider their collaboration with Minturn Nut, a high-volume almond processing plant. Minturn Nut faces a distinct challenge: processing up to 500 bins of almonds daily requires grading accuracy far beyond the current method that samples a mere 0.1%. Additionally, they sought to automate per-bin data entry into their existing Nutware inventory management system, ensuring no disruption to their current automated workflows — including automated report generation, input from weighing scales, and data entry.

Borde’s response to this challenge is both innovative and efficient. By installing their system on the sizing line, Borde facilitated nearly 100% inspection and USDA grading, along with automated data entry for each bin into Nutware's existing database. This approach necessitated no new inventory software or changes to the current system. Furthermore, Borde integrated seamlessly with Nutware’s PLC system, automating weight updates and report generation, thus freeing the quality control team to concentrate on more critical tasks.

One particularly noteworthy feature on Borde’s homepage is their ROI calculator. This tool enables companies to quickly ascertain the potential for improvement in their sorting operations, providing immediate, data-driven insights.

Impact

But Borde’s ambitions extend beyond technological innovation. They are deeply committed to enhancing global food and sustainability practices. Their goals align with the Zero Hunger program, which supports local agriculture, advocates for sustainable food choices, and pushes for essential policy changes. Reducing food waste and engaging in community dialogues are integral to these efforts. See IMPACT

Under Sam Buragohain's leadership, Borde is not merely advancing the technology of material sorting and inspection. They are also driving significant progress in sustainability and food waste reduction. Borde's AI solutions, coupled with their commitment to broader social goals, distinguish them as a pioneering force in the industry.
