For local businesses and non-profit organizations financially impacted by COVID-19, the Santa Cruz County Small Business Development Center and Cabrillo College have partnered together to provide paid internships for students. This initiative allows students and employers to collaboratively work through economical and logistical challenges. Students will have the opportunity to apply their expertise in a professional setting, while employers will aid in sustaining operations and revenues affected by the economic crisis. Employers will be asked to provide details on specific needs for their operation and to develop internships based on the criteria below:

  • Supervision and mentorship from the employer

  • A clear description of the role’s duties and responsibilities

  • 30-100 internship hours (the duration of the internship can be flexible)

  • A living wage of $16.00/per hour (funds provided will cover the wages) and on payroll for the business/organization (or through Cabrillo College’s 3rd Party Employee Payroll services through FCCC Career Catalyst

During these unprecedented times, it can be difficult to execute projects into motion without knowing the outcome. However, there are countless resources to provide assistance for ongoing businesses and startups alike.

“As the umbrella organization for the Santa Cruz County business community, our goal for 2021 is to spark and support 21 new start-ups,” commented Doug Erickson, Executive Director of Santa Cruz Works.

From businesses to students, opportunities can be created to keep the economy thriving.
