Swellcycle Company Spotlight Tour

On October 18, 2024, Santa Cruz Works hosted a company spotlight breakfast featuring Swellcycle, a startup making 3D printed surfboards out of recycled materials. Approximately 20 attendees gathered at the small but sweetly tech packed Swellcycle headquarters in the Wrigley Building to learn about their innovative approach to surfboard design and manufacturing.

Patricio Guerrero, the CEO of Swellcycle, led the event providing insights into the company's cutting-edge technologies and the exceptional performance of their surfboards. One of the highlights was an amusing demonstration of the shaka 🤙 hand lamp, a unique 3d printed lamp created by Swellcycle to test the light-diffusing properties of their surfboard materials.

Swellcycle's commitment to innovation extends to their manufacturing process. They use recycled hospital trays, bio based resin, and custom-built equipment to create flexible, high performing boards. They also work with local shapers allowing them to create highly personalized and performance-driven boards that can be uniquely tailored to individual surfers' needs. Patricio also addressed questions from the attendees such as what happens if the board cracks or a major hole forms.

The Eddie is Swellcycle’s first board available for purchase to the public and has already begun shipping out to surfers around the world. The startup continues to do research and development on the best lattice shapes to reduce the weight of their boards while maintaining durability but a responsive feel for the surfer.

The company spotlight event offered attendees a valuable opportunity to learn about the future of surfboard design and witness firsthand the passion and dedication of the Swellcycle team. As they continue to push the boundaries of surfboard technology, Swellcycle is poised to make a significant impact on the surfing industry and a local startup to keep an eye on.
